Henrietta Dredge (Died 1907)
Henrietta’s husband heard her calling from beyond the grave.
Albert Dredge
Albert Dredge buried his wife Henrietta, fondly known as Hettie, in August 1907. He was a 34 year old Boer War veteran who had been decorated for his bravery. It appears he was quietly struggling with his grief, and probably still haunted by what he had seen in South Africa.
In April of the following year, the cemetery gatekeeper saw Albert apparently praying at his late wife’s grave. Then, to the man’s horror, he watched Albert sit down on Hettie’s grave, carefully take off his hat and shoot himself.
Albert had become convinced that Hettie was calling to him, asking him to join her, and he felt ‘bound to go’. He left a note explaining the situation to his best friend. A second note, found in his pocket, was an apology to Miss Rebecca Payne. She was the young woman he had been due to marry three days later.
