Statement: Cycling incidents in The Regent’s Park
We were extremely sorry to hear of the incident which resulted in the death of Hilda Griffiths and the recent incident in which a local dog walker was hit by a cyclist in the same spot. We take visitor safety extremely seriously. The speed limit for motor vehicles in The Regent’s Park is 20mph and this is clearly signposted on both the Outer and Inner Circles.
In The Regent’s Park, we are working closely with the police and other partners, notably the Crown Estate Paving Commission (CEPC)*, to review if there are any additional measures we can put in place to encourage safe cycling in the park. This might include altered crossing points intended to improve pedestrian safety and additional signage, as we have introduced in Richmond Park, but no decision has yet been made. It is important to note that any decision needs to be made in conjunction with the CEPC. We have also commissioned traffic studies in The Regent’s Park to help inform any future changes we might make. These considerations are ongoing, and we will work with partners to progress this work. We have made contact and will follow up with cycling apps such as Strava to request removal of the Outer Circle in The Regent’s Park as a segment on the app.
In our policy statement, which can be found on our website, we do ask that cyclists on our roads observe the motor vehicle speed limit in the parks, which is 20mph across the Royal Parks roads. This helps to maintain a safe environment for visitors of all ages, and protects road users, as well as wildlife. Park visitors, whatever their mode of transport, must comply with the Park Regulations. All road users must use the roads in an appropriate manner to the prevailing conditions, and with due care for themselves and for others.
Our full policy statement can be found below.
The Royal Parks has no enforcement powers. Enforcement of Park Regulations is solely a matter for the police.
*The role of the Crown Estate Paving Commission is to repair and maintain the streets, pavements and gardens of the Crown Estate around Regent’s Park. Any decision on road alterations would be taken jointly between CEPC and The Royal Parks.
